International Childcare Trust (charity reg. no: 1119939) was founded in 1982 by a teacher and a handful of his colleagues who worked at the grassroots level in the UK, Asia and Africa. They were dissatisfied with how organisations worked with vulnerable children, feeling that they were not being properly consulted and actively involved in planning their own personal development. ICT was therefore founded on the concepts of empowerment and child-centred, active participation.

Initially running in-country offices in India, Kenya and Sri Lanka, ICT took a strategic decision in 2002 to localise these branch offices and instead develop long-term partnerships (of up to 15 years) with local NGOs making local communities active participants in their own development.
