Tanzania

In Tanzania, children under 15 make up 43% of the population.  The number of children living and working on the streets has increased significantly since the early 1990s predominantly due to the impact of poverty and HIV/AIDS on households.

Faraja Trust Fund
Faraja Trust Fund was established in 1991 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  Faraja, based in Morogoro, central Tanzania, provides support to vulnerable children and their families, especially those affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty.  From only three volunteers, Faraja has grown into a vibrant organisation with 83 volunteers including peer educators, homecare nurses, credit advisers and life skills trainers.  Faraja’s key activities include HIV/AIDS prevention education, care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS, income generation support for out-of-school youth, non-formal education for orphans and street children, and legal/human rights advice and support.

"I see hope that having HIV is not the end of the road."

"The attitude of parents is different now, there is less violence..."

Shalom Centre for Street Children
International Childcare Trust established a partnership with Shalom Centre for Street Children in March 2011.  Shalom is a local NGO established in 2005 by seven dedicated members of the community to provide support to street children in Arusha, northern Tanzania.  As well as providing a number of services from its main centre, meeting the basic needs of orphans and street children, Shalom has developed an extensive outreach programme within the community, which focuses on reintegrating these children back into society.
