Previous Challeneges:

ICT organised two Cycle Challenges in India, the first challenge took place in March 2005 and the second cycle challenge took place in November 2008.

As with our previous Challenges in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Cambodia, participants had the opportunity to visit an ICT project and see the positive outcomes of their fundraising efforts!

  At International Childcare Trust we recognize that if we are to protect the rights of the most vulnerable children in Asia and Africa, we must include disabled children!
  
  Working in partnership with our local partner organizations across Africa and Asia, and with a new partner in Sierra Leone, we will be working towards integrating disabled children into our programmes, and working together on advocacy initiatives to protect their rights.
  
  We look forward to sharing more on this important area in the future.

      Ian advises ICT on legal matters and his inside knowledge of how small, private trusts and foundations actually work helps ICT to plan its fundraising strategy. Ian and his now wife took part in ICT's 2005 Cycle India challenge; after which, they visited an ICT supported project.

Eleanor is now an independent consultant with 20 years experience working for international NGOs in developing countries and UK. During her time working with VSO and CARE International in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and with Sightsavers International in UK, Eleanor has developed a wide range of experience in project development, programme management, monitoring and evaluation, partnership working, policy development and application in practice, organisational learning, disability issues, training and facilitation.

CAFOD has very developed systems and Ann can advise the ICT Team on international development sector processes, in terms of what is considered 'good practice,' which can inform what is increasingly required by the Charity Commission and major donors such as Comic Relief, DFID and BIG. Ann has her PhD in virology and her background in public health can help inform ICT’s programmes work on HIV/AIDS. Ann serves as a member of ICT’s Programmes Development Committee, a sub-committee of the Board.

      Before joining ICT, James had previously worked as a fundraiser for a creative arts charity for over two years and volunteered for a local NGO in Nepal teaching English to children in the Kathmandu Valley.

Manager at the beginning of the 2006/2007 financial year and has an extensive background working in the not-for-profit sector. She worked for four years in the finance department of Everychild, another INGO, which works to protect the rights of and offer opportunities to some of the world’s poorest children.  She also continues to volunteer her time with Samaritans where she was Director of her local branch.
      
      Angela has an extensive and varied background of administration and bookkeeping and has broad experience using professional accounting packages, including Quickbooks, to which ICT moved in 2006/2007.  She brings great organisational skills to the ICT Team.

      Bibek is 12 years old and is originally from Bhakimli, a small village in Myagdi District, mid-west Nepal.  With very little land and not enough food to sustain them, Bibek’s family decided to move in search of work.  They headed to Beni, a bustling town lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and numerous government offices, just five hours walk away.  Not long after moving, however, Bibek’s mother left his father for another man.  Although his father soon remarried, Bibek and his younger brother no longer wanted to live with him as he was an alcoholic and often turned violent, and so went to live with their grandparents.

      As with our previous Challenges in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Cambodia, participants had the opportunity to visit an ICT project and see the positive outcomes of their fundraising efforts!
      
      Participants took part in a stunning 400km cycle challenge. From the coast of the India Ocean, pedalling through game reserves, passing Maasai tribes and camping under the starry African sky. From ‘Dar es Salaam, cycling towards Saadani National Park to the village of Ngerengere. Finally arriving at the foot of the Ulguru Mountains outside Morogoro. This ride took particiapantts off the beaten track and beyond the boundaries of a normal safari.
      
       Kalki Welfare Society was established in 2008 in response to rising numbers of street children in Pondicherry, South India.  Although this is a relatively new initiative, the Kalki team is already having a profound effect upon the lives of children who live and work on the streets.  One such child is Saraniya.
      
      Saraniya is ten years old.  Her mother died when she was very young and she no longer sees her father.  She grew up living with her grandmother who works as a prostitute in Pondicherry’s Old Town, the main tourist strip of the French colonial city.  Saraniya’s grandmother forced her to find work in order to contribute to the meager family income – she had no other choice but to become a prostitute.  At home, Saraniya received very little care and protection; on the streets she was vulnerable to police harassment, violence from locals, and exploitation by sex tourists.  Like so many o... ]]>Mon, 07 Mar 2011 16:12:26 GMTIndusa is one of hundreds of women who have received support from WEAEP, a local grassroots NGO which promotes the rights of women and children in Kenya's Western Province.
      
      Illiteracy traps women into a cycle of poverty with limited options for economic improvement, sentencing their children to chronic poverty and limited education and training opportunities.  In January 2008, Indusa made a life changing decision... to join the village literacy centre in her local community.  This was one of 98 village literacy centres that WEAEP has established to date.  The centres provide literacy classes, vocational training, access to micro-credit and savings schemes, sexual health support, legal advice, and, very importantly, a safe, confidential environment where women can meet to discuss issues affecting their rights such as domestic violence and sexual abuse.

      Boupha is 16 years old.  She no longer lives at home as her mother gambles and her father, who is an alcoholic, is often violent.  Boupha often missed school to look after her younger sisters or sell vegetables at the market.
       
      “I worried that because I missed so much school I would never get a good job and my family would always struggle.  I saw my future full of poverty, fear and sadness.  I felt afraid to stick up for myself and fight for my right to education.  I want to have a job so that I can earn a safe income and feel proud to have skills that support me and my family.”
      
      Boupha first heard about M’Lop Tapang through its outreach work in the community.  MT's... ]]>Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:33:37 GMTFaraja Trust Fund provides support to vulnerable children and their families, especially those affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty.  Abasi is sixteen years old and is HIV positive.  With ongoing support from Faraja, Abasi is looking forward to a brighter future. 
       
      After both his parents died in 1999, Abasi and his brother and sister went to live with their uncle.
      
      "The situation was very bad, most of the time we went to bed on an empty stomach, not because there was no food, but our uncle did not want us to eat.  I was the most victimised because by that time I was always sick.  My uncle used to say that I was suffering from the same disease that killed my parents.  I was eating alone, sleeping in my own bed and was not allowed to share food with the rest of the family."
      
      In 2003, Abasi became sick and very nearly died.  His uncle took him to the local hospital but the medica... ]]>Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:33:24 GMTFollowing the 2004 Asian Tsunami, Shilpa Children’s Trust expanded its area of work to cover Hambantota, one of the districts worst affected by the disaster.  One of the many children who received support from Shilpa was Shanthi.
      
      Shanthi used to live with her parents and two siblings in a small coastal village in Hambantota.  Her mother would stay at home to care for Shanthi and her siblings while her father worked at the local saltworks.  In December 2004, Shanthi’s mother was killed by the tsunami, which hit the southern and eastern coasts of Sri Lanka and resulted in the death of approximately 40,000 people.

      A fundraising event can be educational and fun, whilst helping raise vital funds for our work.
      
      There are many ways you can fundraise at school, or with a group of young people. Young people at clubs and in youth groups can use these ideas too!
      
      There are a wide range of activities you can take part in - including sponsored runs, walks, class challenges, cake sales and collections - to raise money for some of the poorest children in the world.

      ICT began working with Shilpa Children’s Trust in 1998.  Back then, Shilpa, a local NGO in Sri Lanka, was modestly run by a group of former head-mistresses, school teachers and judges' wives.  Local volunteers were involved, surviving by raising funds from events and the sale of goods made by the children.  ICT identified Shilpa as a potential partner because of its strong community participation, commitment to common values, and sound leadership.  Initially, we spent a lot of time learning from each other and Shilpa spent a lot of time with the local community, asking how Shilpa could improve its work and make a 'step-change' as an organisation, so it could make more of an impact on the lives of displaced girls in Sri Lanka.
