Sihanoukville is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia.  This economic activity attracts large numbers of families to the city in search of prosperity, only to find extreme poverty - a typical family of five living in the slums earns an average of just 75p per day.

M'Lop Tapang
Just as the Tapang tree provides ‘M’Lop’ (protection in Khmer) for those who shelter under its branches, M’Lop Tapang represents a safe haven for the street children of Sihanoukville.  M'Lop Tapang is a community-based NGO founded in 2003, which empowers vulnerable children by providing them with the tools, resources and opportunities they need to build a better future.  Initially running classes for street children from under a Tapang tree, M’Lop Tapang now works with over 3,000 children and 900 families at nine specialised centres across Sihanoukville.  M’Lop Tapang offers regular meals, emergency shelter, medical care, education and training, counselling, and protection from all types of abuse.  It works closely with schools, the police and local authorities to help make the community a safer place for all children.

"No one had ever asked me about my hopes and dreams before."
